Vanity Fair: Trump Mulls Manafort Pardon

President Donald Trump continues to consider a pardon for Paul Manafort, the former campaign chairman who was convicted last week of tax and bank fraud that could put him behind bars for 80 years, Vanity Fair reported Monday.

VF’s Gabriel Sherman, citing two unnamed sources, reported that the president has locked horns on the issue with White House counsel Don McGahn, who is strongly against a pardon.

But according to Sherman, Trump has told people he’s considering bringing in a new lawyer to draft the pardon if McGahn won’t.

“He really at this point does not care,” an unnamed source told Sherman. “He would rather fight the battle. He doesn’t want to do anything that would cede executive authority.”

Trump’s legal team — which includes Rudy Giuliani and Jay Sekulow — reportedly believe it’s better to wait and see how the special counsel's Russia investigation plays out before making any decisions about a Manafort pardon.
