President Donald Trump's campaign has paid almost $4 million in legal fees, including $556,000 since Election Day, according to Federal Election Commission figures analyzed by Politico.

Trump's campaign committee is paying to defend against civil lawsuits that claim assault and other illegal behavior by the president, his supporters and staff. In at least four cases that are still ongoing, the committee has not paid, paid late, or paid small amounts to law firms that are representing the committee.

Jones Day, the campaign's law firm, has received most of the payouts, $3.3 million as of the end of March, Politico reported.

Brett Kappel, an election law attorney, told Politico that the campaign is not being transparent with its filings, since it lists settlement payments as "legal consulting."

"Basically, the Trump campaign was run just like the Trump Organization—lawsuits are met with bluster and invective and then ultimately settled quietly with everyone involved required to sign nondisclosure agreements so that the public would not know that Trump, in fact, does settle many of the lawsuits against him and his family members," Kappel said.

One Charlotte-based law firm that had been representing Trump's campaign for seven months in a case did not receive any payment. And when it finally did, Trump's team overpaid.

"They made an arithmetic error," Philip Van Hoy, a partner with Van Hoy, Reutlinger, Adams & Dunn, told Politico, adding that his firm has done work to cover the overpayment.

The campaign has also not yet paid the Birmingham, Alabama firm Maynard, Cooper & Gale over an African-American man's lawsuit in which he claimed to have been kicked and punched by Trump supporters at a Birmingham rally.

The lawyers have filed to dismiss that case.

"It would be entirely unreasonable to impose a duty on the Trump Campaign to actively police the behavior of every individual who attends a campaign rally," the filing said, according to a copy of the filing posted by Politico.

The amount of money that Trump's campaign has spent on legal fees is more than double the amount that President Barack Obama's campaign had spent until this point in his presidency, Politico's report added.
