New York billionaire Stephen Feinberg, a Donald Trump loyalist, is expected to be named by the president to lead a broad review of American intelligence agencies, The New York Times is reporting.

The anticipated appointment of Feinberg, co-founder of Cerberus Capital Management, is already meeting opposition from intelligence officials, who are smarting over Trump's continued criticism, according to the newspaper.

Most recently, Trump has blamed the intelligence community for leaks which led to the resignation of Michael Flynn as national security adviser, the Times noted.

Feinberg, who is a member of Trump's economic advisory council, has close ties to White House chief strategist Steve Bannon and the president's son-in-law Jared Kushner, the newspaper reported.

"Bringing Mr. Feinberg into the administration to conduct the review is seen as a way of injecting a Trump loyalist into the world the White House views with suspicion," the Times said.

Intelligence officials are also concerned Feinberg is being eyed for a top position in one of the intelligence agencies.

At one point he was reportedly being looked at for either director of national intelligence or chief of the CIA, the Times said.

However, the newspaper noted, his only experience with national security is his firm's stakes in a private security company and two gun makers.
