The drumbeat of attacks on the investigation of special counsel Robert Mueller is designed to sow doubt and shape public perception in the event President Donald Trump decides to issue pardons, Politico reported.

If enough Americans think Mueller's probe is politically motivated, Trump allies believe that could mitigate blowback on the president if he decides to pardon those ensnared in the ongoing Russia collusion investigation, Politico reports.

"It is definitely a smarter strategy than outright firing of Mueller, because that is likely to create a firestorm," Elizabeth de la Vega, a former assistant U.S. attorney told Politico.

Trump allies have jumped on the recent revelations that two FBI agents who used to work for Mueller showed bias against Trump and that Mueller seized campaign emails without a warrant.

All in the name of attacking the integrity and credibility of Mueller's probe.

"The collective criticism of Mueller and his staff … and the calls for a second special counsel are clearly part of an orchestrated strategy to try to discredit Mueller and, in turn, to potentially lay the groundwork to justify a pardon for (Michael) Flynn," an attorney representing a senior Trump aide told Politico.

One former U.S. attorney said the tactic is not unlike defense attorneys at trial.

"Putting the police on trial in this way is a common tactic of criminal defense attorneys. If the public is conditioned to doubt the credibility of Mueller, then the public may also doubt the validity of the charges themselves," Barbara McQuade told Politico.
