Trump administration officials are trying to replace Veteran Affairs Secretary David Shulkin, The New York Times is reporting.

In a December email, Jake Leinenkugel, White House senior adviser on veteran affairs, listed possible ways to push out the leadership in the department, according to the newspaper. The email was addressed to Camilo Sandoval, who holds a political post at the department, the Times said.

Leinenkugel suggested "solutions" including using a continuing probe of Shulkin’s travel to replace the secretary’s chief of staff, Vivieca Wright Simpson; dumping deputy secretary Thomas Bowman and removing Shulkin for "strong political candidate," the newspaper said.

His suggested replacement is Michael Kussman, a former undersecretary, the Times reported.

But the newspaper said it was uncertain whether President Donald Trump supported the move.

Meanwhile, the department’s inspector general issued a report this week critical of a business trip Shulkin took to Great Britain and Denmark in 2017. The report said he improperly accepted Wimbledon tickets and spent much of the trip sightseeing.

Shulkin, a holdover from the Obama administration, said the report was inaccurate, but agreed to reimburse the government for his wife’s airline tickets and pay for the tennis tickets, the Times said.

On Wednesday, Shulkin maintained political appointees in his office were “trying to undermine the department from within.”

One House member, Rep. Mike Coffman, R-Colo, has called for Shulkin’s resignation as a result of the inspector general’s report.
