True the Vote Founder: Must Continue Fight for Fair Elections

After losing the White House and failing to regain a majority in the Senate in November, many people might feel the need to step back and reassess, but not Catherine Engelbrecht, president of True the Vote.

Engelbrecht tells Newsmax TV that her group, dedicated to strengthening laws against vote fraud and maintaining voter integrity, is dedicated to teambuilding in 2013 and making sure that every polling place has citizen representation.

Story continues below.

Current efforts are focusing on state voter ID laws. Engelbrecht takes issue with U.S. Attorney Gen. Eric Holder’s assertion that such requirements suppress the vote of minority groups and the poor.

Voter ID secures the process and is popular, Engelbrecht said. “Seventy-one percent of Latinos agree that photo voter identification is necessary. Our Department of Justice, though, seems to be motivated by a different agenda.”

A former Democratic official and board of elections worker accused of being part of a plot to provide signatures to qualify President Barack Obama on the Indiana ballot in 2008 are currently facing trial. Though it has been five year’s since Obama’s first election, Engelbrecht feels it is important to look into other states where similar offenses might have occurred.

“We need to understand that all of that was done freely, fairly and for many, many years now we have seen tools like petitions, like recall efforts where they just assume that nobody will check, and it’s time that we shed some light.”

Engelbrecht tells Newsmax that as immigration reform works its way through Congress, the Republican Party must make sure it communicates its message to the 11 million currently illegal immigrants who would be put on a path to citizenship.

“Both parties need to be well-represented in getting those citizens engaged in the process, and I believe that the party that speaks to the reason that people immigrate to this country, which is to dream the dream and to have liberty, that party should be heard from loud and clear.”

Asked about political action groups, such as as Karl Rove’s Conservative Victory Project, that attempt to anoint certain candidates or weed out those deemed unacceptable, Engelbrecht said the political process was designed to allow for a rigorous primary process that would take care of those concerns.

“It is troubling when you see consultants being kingmakers,” she said. Volunteers should be more involved at the primary level and get behind candidates that may not stand with the establishment, she added. “There are lots of good men and women out there, but not always the ones that consultants deliver.”

A “sleeper issue” that needs more attention, Engelbrecht said, is the George Soros-funded group aiming to elect Democrats as state secretaries of state across the nation.

“It was Joseph Stalin who once said, show me not who votes, show me who counts the votes,” she said. “Well, secretaries of state count the votes, and if George Soros is putting money to electing handpicked secretaries of state for what we know is a very partisan agenda, it only stands to reason that he intends to use that power as he sees fit.”

True the Vote is suing St. Lucie County, Fla., over a botched election that prevented Rep. Allen West’s re-election to Congress. Engelbrecht says her group wants to be able to conduct a citizen audit.

“We want to be able to look at the documents that should be available to the public as a matter of law and, sadly, that has not found the quick and expedient answer that we had hoped,” she said. “But we will make sure that St. Lucie County is known for what it did or didn’t do.
