Gowdy: Nunes Didn't Disclose Russia Probe Details to Trump

By    |   Sunday, 26 Mar 2017 01:16 PM

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes briefed President Donald Trump on matters that were not related to the probe concerning Russia, Rep. Trey Gowdy said Sunday, while defending his fellow Republican congressman.

"If that's a big deal in Washington, then we've sunk to a new low," the South Carolina lawmaker told CBS' "Face the Nation." "If the commander in chief cannot be briefed by the chairperson of the House Intel Committee on a matter that has nothing to do with the FBI investigation, then I don't know what they can talk about."

Nunes has said he spoke with the president after learning that the U.S. intelligence community had incidentally collected Trump's transition team while conducting surveillance, and then "widely disseminated" the information among its agencies.

"The felonious dissemination of classified information is the only thing we know for sure is a crime, and it would be nice if we showed the same level of interest in that," he said.

Nunes came under fire from both sides of the aisle for speaking with Trump before fellow committee members, including the top Democrat on the committee, California Rep. Adam Schiff, bringing criticism from both sides of the aisle.

Gowdy also on Sunday said he does not agree with people such as Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who have called for an independent commission to investigate Russian interference.

"Thank goodness we have one," said Gowdy. "It's called the FBI. The FBI has counterintelligence jurisdiction and they have criminal jurisdiction, and what we learned on Monday, and it's about the only thing we learned on Monday, was that the FBI is investigating both."

The investigation, though, is important, said Gowdy.

"Russia is not our friend," he said. "They attacked our democracy. I want to investigate every fact that is related there too, but the felonious dissemination of classified information is the only thing we know for sure is a crime, and it would be nice if we showed the same level of interest in that."
