Rep. Gowdy Opposes Obama Impeachment Proceedings

By    |   Friday, 14 Nov 2014 01:11 PM

"Have you met Joe Biden?

That's what Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., gave as the ultimate reason on Fox News' "The O'Reilly Factor" for not favoring impeachment proceedings against President Barack Obama over the president's intention to use executive action to grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens.

"I've met Joe Biden," Gowdy told OReilly. "He would be the new president. That's not the answer, to replace Barack Obama with Joe Biden."

Story continues below video.

Gowdy said, "Nobody is discussing impeachment except for pundits and commentators. First of all, impeachment is a punishment, it's not a remedy. Second of all, the only people who want to talk about impeachment are the president's allies."

Therefore, Gowdy said, he is not willing to take the "bait" of moving forward with impeachment proceedings against Obama.

However, Gowdy, chairman of the House Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Border Security, added, "We need to persuade our fellow citizens that from 2008 to 2010, when [Obama] had the House, the Senate, and the White House, he didn't do a damn thing about immigration, so why can't he give the Republican House and Senate three months, six months, nine months to do what he wasn't able to do in two years?

"He's going to poison the well if he does that, and he just needs to understand upfront, if he wants a solution, he'll wait. If he wants an issue for their candidate to run on in 2016, then he will do what he's planning on doing."

Opposition is steadily growing to Obama's plan. Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., told Breitbart she will introduce legislation in January to freeze Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival plan and "tie the president's hands with regard to the creation of future deferred action programs."

Calling the midterm elections a "historical rejection of his [Obama's] radical agenda," she wrote in Breitbart, "The president is threatening to expand his unconstitutional amnesty in December, which represents a direct threat to the economic and national security of this country."

While Gowdy says there are a number of Democrats he's happy to work with in Congress, he told O'Reilly that by using executive action on amnesty, "The president is going to destroy whatever remnant of trust exists between Republicans in Congress and his administration if he does by fiat what he wouldn't do in two years when he could have done it."
