Rep. Franks: Misinformation Spreading About House GOP Healthcare Plan

(Fox News/"Fox & Friends")

There is a great deal of misinformation circling about that the House Republicans' healthcare plan will leave many people without coverage through Medicaid cuts, but the numbers don't add up to support that claim, Rep. Trent Franks said Wednesday.

"We spend about a combined amount of about $380 billion on Medicaid now," the Arizona Republican told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program.

"Under the Republican plan, we'll be spending $500 billion over a period of 10 years. I don't know how in the world they call that a cut."

He blamed the wrong information on the media, saying it "has a way of whipping up a lot of folks that really believe some of the fallacies they are told."

One of the greatest challenges to the nation now is that "we no longer invite truth to the debate," he continued. "It's not considered on the part of the left a bad tactic to say something that isn't true.

"They don't hold themselves constrained to the truth, which makes it very difficult to debate them," he said. "While you're trying to put out the fires, the truth gets lost. I'm just hoping that people will pay attention to the facts, and if they do, they will see that Obamacare is imploding."

At this point, said Franks, "it's the public policy of the Hindenburg," and the public will know something different is needed once they realize Obamacare's failure.

"We're trying so hard to bring back market forces to affect this innovation that we so desperately need in healthcare," he added.

Meanwhile, Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and others have said they oppose the part in the House plan that defunds Planned Parenthood, saying it is an important provider of healthcare services for millions of women.

House members, including Franks, say if the Senate stops that provision, it will kill the healthcare measure in their chamber.

"It's important to keep in mind that Barack Obama once voted four times against a bill that would have protected born alive, crying, breathing little babies because he was afraid that if it passed, it might give rationale to protect unborn children," Franks charged.

"It shouldn't surprise us that Obamacare has all of these subsidies to promote abortion and to allow policies that affect abortion. That's where there's a major disconnect here."

Republicans, he continued, do not believe that abortion should be considered as healthcare.

"Unfortunately in the Senate, under reconciliation, they're constrained by this rule that doesn't give them latitude for negotiation," said Franks.

"When there's any difference, we don't have the ability to put something in that would nullify people like Sen. Collins and gain her vote. It's very difficult to do that. The Senate rules are a great threat to the Republicans as they're being interpreted at this point."
