Paul Manafort, the ex-chairman of Donald Trump's campaign who resigned after being criticized for his past lobbying work with pro-Russian Ukrainian oligarchs, is advising Donald Trump on Cabinet picks, sources told the Daily Beast.

Manafort, hired by the Trump campaign in April to help give Trump a soft edge, resigned in August but essentially never stayed away. Bloomberg Businessweek reported the former lobbyist was key in the final stretch of the election, even pushing Trump to go after the blue-collar votes in Michigan, a state he only recently won.

He is also in constant contact with Vice President-elect Mike Pence and "weighing in on everything," one insider told the Daily Beast.

"I think he still talks to Trump every day. I mean, Pence? That was all Manafort. Pence is on the phone with Manafort regularly."

It's all for personal gain, the insider said.

"A guy like Manafort tries to make sure that the government is as comfortable for business as possible. He wants names he knows on every door. He's not worried as much about who's the secretary of HHS as he is about who's the secretary of HUD."
