Poll: National Security Pros Favor Romney in 2016

The results of a new poll show Mitt Romney is the top choice for president in the 2016 election among national security professionals.

Defense One polled national security workers and members of the military and found that Romney was the favored choice to lead the country when President Barack Obama leaves the White House.

The news outlet has not released the full results of the survey, but it reports that Romney edged out both Republicans and Democrats — a list of 10 names that included Sens. Ted Cruz , R-Texas, Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and Rand Paul, R-Ky., along with Florida's former Republican Gov. Jeb Bush, and Democrat and former first lady Hillary Clinton.

Defense One reports that Cruz, Rubio, and Paul "tanked" in the poll results. Bush was second and Clinton was third. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) was fourth, while New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Texas Gov. Rick Perry, both Republicans, were fifth and sixth.

The survey was given to 427 voters from the Departments of State, Defense, and Homeland Security.

Romney has said he will not seek the presidency in 2016 after launching failed bids in 2008 and 2012. But there is talk behind the scenes that his aides are trying to persuade him to go another round, reports the Washington Post.

Romney stayed in the public eye during the midterm election season by stumping for GOP candidates across the country.

Some experts, however, say Romney would not be the best choice for Republicans.
