Perez Calls Republicans 'Heartless' Over ACA, Budget Cuts

Republican leaders were "heartless" when dealing with the Affordable Care Act, as repealing the measure will affect 24 million people, Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez believes, and on Tuesday he wasn't walking back expletive-laced remarks he made last week about how the GOP feels about Americans.

"Look at the budget, the so-called skinny budget," Perez told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program Tuesday. "It's heartless . . . budgets are moral documents reflecting the value of government."

On Friday, during an expletive-laced shot at the Republican Party, Perez called President Donald Trump a bully, criticized his visits to his Mar-a-Lago property in Florida, and praised the protesters who took part in marches the day after Trump took office.

"I was talking about the Republican leadership," Perez said Tuesday. "As you know, in the Affordable Health Care Act, we help 24 million people get access to life-saving healthcare. We helped seniors get access to prescription drug relief. We're helping people addicted to opiods get the care needed that's a lifeline."

But with Trump's "skinny budget," there are people who rely on Meals on Wheels facing budget cuts, even though they rely on the program so they can stay in their homes, said Perez.

"Not only is it heartless to cut funding for that, but it's stupid because you know what happens if these people aren't able to live at home?" said Perez.

"They are going to a nursing home and it's far more expensive to go to a nursing home on Medicaid than it is to stay at home. So that is heartless."

Perez said he has no regrets what he said, because regrets are about "the people who are scared to death as a result of the first 60 days of chaos and carnage in this administration."

"It doesn't make our nation stronger when you propose to cut Meals on Wheels or low income home energy assistance for people in Buffalo in the winter or people in the south in the summer," said Perez.

"That's not who we are as a nation. We can do better."
