The new head of the Democratic National Committee received a tepid reception during an event Monday night.
The Daily Caller reports that Claire Cummings of the Maine Young Democrats was speaking to a crowd in Portland, Maine and got a big cheer when she mentioned Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who finished second in the 2016 Democratic presidential primary. But seconds later when she mentioned new DNC chairman Tom Perez at the party's "Come Together Fight Back" tour stop, the reception was a bit different.
"Maybe you came though because you're curious about the new DNC chairman and the future of the Democratic party," Cummings said.
A smattering of boos and a few cheers then came from the audience, which seemed to surprise Cummings. She quickly recovered and continued speaking.
After Hillary Clinton lost to Donald Trump in the presidential election last fall, the DNC spent months trying to figure out what happened and what it could learn from the defeat.
Perez is the third person to lead the DNC since last summer, following the departure of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Donna Brazile.
