Stopping the delegation of Congressional Democrats from traveling overseas Thursday was the wrong move by President Donald Trump, Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., told Newsmax TV.
Cole was on "Newsmax Now" and said Trump's decision to stop House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other lawmakers from hopping on a government plane only widened the divide between Pelosi's office and the White House.
The move came one day after Pelosi told Trump to reschedule his State of the Union address, slated for Jan. 29, because of the government shutdown.
"I think it's unfortunate for both of them, quite frankly," Cole said. "I don't think the State of the Union should have ever been cancelled. I think if you want to get down to this level, I think the speaker started it, that's a tradition that's almost 120 years old. To do this, I think, was a slight.
"By the same token, I wish the president hadn't canceled the trip."

A group of Democrats found out about the trip, which would have taken them to Afghanistan and Brussels, being canceled while they were en route to the airport.
Cole said official trips by members of Congress to U.S. allies and American military bases overseas are part of the job.
"I am a big believer in these sorts of things," he said. "It's not gonna hurt the speaker, it's not gonna hurt the president of the United States, but what it is doing is putting the personal relationship at a point that they simply can't work with one another."
Trump and Pelosi are locked in a stalemate with the government shutdown at about four weeks long and showing no signs of ending. Pelosi refuses to allocate money for a border wall between the United States and Mexico, and Trump is unwilling to drop that demand.
Cole said Trump "offered a compromise in December . . . so I think he's tried to negotiate, tried to split the difference. I don't think she has."
