Thomas Bossert, chief counterterrorism adviser to President Donald Trump, said Russia clearly tried to meddle in the 2016 election, Politico is reporting.

And Bossert maintained former President Barack Obama retaliatory measures should have gone further.

Bossert's comments came during a national security forum in Aspen, Colorado on Thursday, and when asked whether the Russians attempted to manipulate the presidential election, Bossert said: "There's a pretty clear and easy answer to this and it's 'yes.'"

Meanwhile, Politico's Ali Watkins noted it's "conclusion that his boss in the Oval Office has repeatedly questioned."

But Bossert said there is no evidence Russia tampered with actual ballots, USA Today reported.

Bossert was joined by CIA Director Mike Pompeo in claiming Russia had involved itself in the U.S. elections.

Russia has been doing it for years, not just in 2016, according to Pompeo.

"Of course,'' Pompeo said of the Russia efforts in 2016 election. "And the one before that, and the one before that. "(Russia) has no intention of backing off.''

Meanwhile, Bossert suggested the U.S. could take tougher measures against Russia in the future, according to the newspaper.

"Not one bad actor is paying for their actions,'' Bossert said.

Obama's response to the Russian interference, kicking out 35 Russian diplomats, "wasn't adequate in my mind," he said.

The hacking and release of stolen Democratic National Committee emails in 2016 were "unacceptable efforts and behaviors by a foreign nation state," Bossert said, according to Politico.

Bossert said the Trump administration is looking at how to deter cyberattack measures, including imposing financial penalties. He cautioned, however, those efforts will take time.

"We'll satisfy you, but we won't satisfy you in enough time," Bossert said.
