Hillary Clinton slammed the tenure of former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, calling it an "absolute tragedy" and adding that the nomination of Mike Pompeo is a "small glimmer of hope" that he'll restore the State Department, the Washington Examiner reports.
Clinton made the comments at a speech at a women-only club Tuesday in New York City.
"It’s a tragedy, it’s an absolute tragedy," Clinton told the assembly at The Wing, the Examiner reported.
"The State Department has been decimated. Tillerson basically didn’t care about a lot of the expertise that members of the department had accumulated over decades," the Examiner quoted Clinton.
Clinton said she hopes Pompeo will emulate the strategy he used when he took over the CIA — lean on the people with the decades of experience and expertise.
"I don’t know what will happen with the nomination of Mike Pompeo to become the next secretary of state, but the one small glimmer of hope is when he went into the CIA, he only brought two people with him and he really relied on the career intelligence people," Clinton said, the Examiner reported.
Tillerson was ousted by President Donald Trump last month.
