Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has eliminated the sanctions policy office, which coordinated deadlines and other foreign sanctions, according to a report in Foreign Policy.

Tillerson made the change as part of his revamping plans for the State Department. The Policy Planning Office will now be responsible for the work that had been done in that office, according to Foreign Policy.

However, the elimination of the office should not be construed as a lack of commitment to sanctions, according to Daniel Fried, a former coordinator for sanctions policy. "It's not as if (the administration) is gutting sanctions altogether," Fried said in Foreign Policy's report.

"They messed up on this. They scrapped this when they could've taken it further. They said, ‘We're just going back to the point where there's no clear coordination,'"  said one former State Department official in the report.

Hillary Clinton, during her tenure as secretary of state, instituted the office as a way to coordinate with allies on sanctions, including working with the Treasury Department and with Asian allies to push sanctions against North Korea, Foreign Policy reported.

The closing of the office followed President Donald Trump's administration missing an Oct. 1 deadline to impose new sanctions against Russia.

The State Department issued guidance for the sanction legislation, identifying some entities and officials in Russia's defense and intelligence arenas. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., on Thursday called that "a good first step" in guidance on implementing the sanctions.
