Thune on Morning Joe: Get Reforms Right

By    |   Thursday, 11 July 2013 12:47 PM EDT

Major reforms including healthcare and immigration must be brought in more slowly and done right, Republican Sen. John Thune said on Thursday.

Speaking on MSNBC's Morning Joe, the South Dakotan said the employer mandate in the Affordable Care Act is one of the issues that has to go — and rather than being put on hold, it should be delayed permanently.

As a practical matter it was hurting jobs, Thune said, but he emphasized that there are healthcare matters that need to be addressed, such as ensuring coverage for those with pre-existing conditions — but that Obamacare was not the way to go about it.

"Things could be done in rightful shots," he said, adding that he’d like to see the legislation delayed and done right. "Where we are is on the side of the public."

He said there was no need for what he called "a massive bill" to deal with minor problems in the healthcare system.

On immigration, Thune emphasized that acting on the pieces might be the better approach if Democrats want to garner Republican votes in the House.
