Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., reported Thursday he is recovering from prostate cancer surgery.

In a statement posted to Twitter, Tillis, 60, said, "This week, I underwent surgery to treat prostate cancer. I’m thankful to the doctors and nurses who have provided me with outstanding care at every step of the way.

"As I recover over the coming days, I'm blessed to have [wife] Susan, my best friend and the love of my life, at my side. We are beyond grateful to everyone who has lifted us up in prayer and sent us well wishes. I look forward to returning to the Senate soon."

Tillis announced March 29 he would be undergoing the surgery. He said cancer had been detected as a result of his annual physical examination. He'd had no symptoms, and "would have never imagined I had cancer."

He urged people to get tested. "I can’t emphasize enough how important routine screenings are, regardless of how healthy you think you are," he said. "Early detection can truly save lives."

He added, "My prognosis is good because I went to my annual physical and received a PSA test, which led to a biopsy, and eventually my diagnosis."

Cancer hasn't been Tillis' only recent battle. The second-term senator endured a tough fight for reelection in November against former State Senator Cal Cunningham, D.

Tillis trailed Cunningham by significant margins in most pre-election polling. Then in October, news broke that Cunningham had been involved in an extramarital affair. After he confirmed the story, Cunningham retained a slight edge as the polls began tightening,

In the end, Tillis prevailed, defeating Cunningham 48.7 percent to 46.9.
