A spokesman for British Prime Minister Theresa May defended Britain's National Health Service against criticism from President Donald Trump.

May's spokesman noted that, for the second time, a U.S.-based think tank named the universal coverage offered by the National Health Service was named the best, safest, and most affordable system in the world, The Independent reported.

"The Prime Minister is proud of having an NHS that is free at the point of delivery. NHS funding is at a record high and was prioritized in the budget," the spokesman said.

Monday morning, Trump tweeted that the UK's health system was "broke and not working."

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt also weighed in on the Trump tweet. "I'm proud to be from the country that invented universal coverage," Hunt said in a tweet.
