Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, says his own party will be to blame for losses in the House this November.
"What is frustrating me is I firmly believe that House Republicans are going to lose the majority. And we're going to lose it because of ourselves," Gonzales said during an interview Thursday with Punchbowl News at the Texas Tribune Festival.
"We're getting outraised. We're getting outspent." He added that the messaging from Democrats "is at a different level than where we're at."
Most people, Gonzales said, "just want their lives to be better. They want to feel safe in their communities. They want their kids to feel safe in school. They want more money in their pockets. These are real issues. ... Yet the House Republicans continue to get in their own way, and I worry if we stay in this spot, we're gonna be in the minority."
Gonzales, a second-term Republican who has been criticized by his own party for breaking on key votes, also cast doubt on former President Donald Trump's proposed mass deportation plan.
"You're not going to round up 10 million people and deport them. It's simple — you do not have the infrastructure to do that," Gonzales told Newsweek Thursday.
"I support President Trump or any president making sure laws are enforced. At times, you've seen President [Joe] Biden do some of this, but it has to be at scale."
"If someone breaks the law, we must immediately give them due process and remove them when they don't meet the standards of asylum," he continued.
