Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., called on Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen to reverse the policy of "ripping toddlers away from their mothers and fathers," who illegally enter the U.S.

Lieu's comments came in a tweet directed at Nielsen.

And in a separate tweet to First Lady Melania Trump, Lieu wrote:

Meanwhile, Lieu has joined with Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., and others in introducing the "Keep Families Together Act."

The proposed legislation would end family separations at the U.S. border and impose financial penalties for those who violate the prohibition on separations.
