Ted Cruz: I've Raised $40 Million

By    |   Thursday, 04 Jun 2015 06:19 PM

Sen. Ted Cruz says he has raised $40 million for his presidential campaign via his own efforts and those of his Super PAC.

Appearing Thursday on Fox News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto," the Texas Republican said that most in the crowded GOP field will not be able to raise the $50 million he says is needed to mount a credible campaign.

Story continues below video.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush doesn't announce until June 15, but will likely have exceeded $100 million by that time, Cavuto said. Others are in the $20 million to $30 million range.

Candidates cannot coordinate with their Super PACs once they have officially announced their intentions, but Cruz said his Super PAC has reported it has $37 million in the bank, and his campaign raised $4.3 million in the first week after his March 23 announcement.

"Both of those are record-shattering," Cruz said.

Bush will shatter all fundraising records, he admitted, but said that won't be enough to get him the nomination.

"Among donors he is Mick Jagger and the Beatles rolled into one, but you have to get actual primary votes," Cruz said.

Cruz's friend and fellow Texan former Gov. Rick Perry announced his candidacy Thursday near Dallas, and Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton was in Texas as well.

When asked about Clinton, Cruz quipped, "I guess there's some trial lawyers in Texas, but last I checked there aren't any foreign nations in Texas to write her million-dollar checks to the campaign or to give her husband speaking fees."
