Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, fired back at criticisms leveled at him by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie by saying his fellow Republican needs to head back to the beach.

Cruz told The New York Times he is "quite confident that nobody in Texas gives a flip what Chris Christie has to say.

"And it seems not many people in New Jersey do either. Chris should go back to the beach."

The last shot was a reference to Christie's decision to bring his family to a beach on a stretch of land that was closed because of a statewide government shutdown in New Jersey in July.

Cruz has been on the ground in Texas helping with recovery and cleanup efforts in the wake of the destruction left by Hurricane Harvey. Last week, Christie spoke with CNN and called out Cruz for voting against the 2013 Hurricane Sandy relief bill — which Cruz said was filled with pork and not much actual aid money.

"I have no sympathy for this — and I see Sen. Cruz and it's disgusting to me that he stands in a recovery center with victims standing behind him as a backdrop," Christie said.

"He's still repeating the same reprehensible lies about what happened in Sandy [and] called on Congress Wednesday morning to work fast on a bill to aid Texas after Hurricane Harvey."

Cruz's decision not to vote for federal relief for victims of Sandy, which decimated parts of New Jersey, has haunted him for years. He told CNN last week, however, that the bill put up for a vote was full of earmarks for local members of Congress.
