Wash Post-ABC News Poll: Fewer Women Interested in Tea Party

Monday, 16 Apr 2012 10:25 AM

Support for the tea party remains stable but interest among women is waning. A new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows that 41 percent support the tea party and 45 percent oppose it, The Washington Post blog Behind the Numbers reports.

The numbers have been stable for the past year. However, interest in the movement is declining, with 60 percent saying they are not interested in hearing more about the party and half saying the more they know about the tea party the less they like it.

The movement has faded among women. In 2010, about equal numbers of men and women said they were interested in learning about the tea party but now the number of women has dropped significantly, the Post reported.

The decline among independent women has been particularly steep. In 2010, a majority of independent women said the more they heard about the tea party the more they liked it. That number has now flipped and independent women by a 2-to-1 margin now say the more they learn about the tea party the less they like it.

The poll surveyed 1,203 adults from April 5-8.
