Tea Party Patriots Chief: We Didn't Endorse Steve Stockman

Tea Party Patriots President Jenny Beth Martin is denying that she and the tea party group endorsed Texas Senate candidate Rep. Steve Stockman as he claimed in a letter posted on his website Sunday. The letter appears to have been taken down by Monday.

"In the contest for the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate in Texas, Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund has not endorsed any candidate for office, nor have I done so personally," Martin said in a statement sent to Breitbart Texas.

"We compliment members of Congress when they uphold the Constitution, or their record in office indicates that they have voted in a manner that reflects our positions on issues," she explained. "That is not an official endorsement in any particular race and should not be misconstrued as such."

In December, Martin had told conservative news website WorldNetDaily that "Congressman Stockman has proven himself to be a fighter for freedom who votes in the House of Representatives based on constitutional principles. We need more senators who will do the same."

Stockman quoted Martin's comments from her WorldNetDaily interview about the Texas Republican candidate and called it an endorsement. He also put her comments on his Facebook page.

"The head of one of the biggest Tea Party groups in American just endorsed me, Congressman Steve Stockman," Stockman wrote about the comments Martin made in December.

According to Breitbart, Dwayne Stovall, another GOP primary candidate challenging Sen. John Cornyn, filed two complaints with the Federal Election Commission alleging that the Republican congressman has violated campaign finance laws.

One of the allegations has to do with a supposed fake newspaper called the Conservative News, published by a group called the Center for the American Future, that was sent out in late February attacking Cornyn and praising Stockman.

Breitbart reported that the group was commissioned by Jason Posey, who is Stockman's former associate, business partner, and campaign treasurer.

Stockman responded to Stovall's allegations in a statement asking why the candidate wasn't more focused on attacking Cornyn.

The Senate primary in Texas is scheduled for Tuesday, March 4.
