Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., took to Twitter Wednesday to urge President Donald Trump to listen to his commanders and not the Office of the Secretary of Defense’s “policy shop” civilians on northern Syria.
“Hopeful cease-fire will hold and appreciate President Trump’s commitment to making sure ISIS does not come back and get a windfall from Syrian oil reserves,” Graham tweeted.
"Mr. President: listen to your commanders, not OSD policy shop civilians. OSD policy shop has been a big problem for a long time," he added.
OSD is responsible for policy development, planning, resource management and program evaluation.
Graham, a member of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, has been a harsh critic of Trump’s plan to pull U.S. troops from northeastern Syria.
The move opened the way for Turkey to launch a military assault against Syrian Kurds.
Earlier Wednesday, though, he praised the president for lifting sanctions on Turkey after the country agreed to permanently stop fighting Kurdish forces in Syria, saying that “this cease-fire, if permanent, represents real progress.”
"President Trump is correct that without sanctions being issued against Turkey there would be no cease-fire," Graham said in a statement.
