Rep. Eric Swalwell is "jeopardizing national security" because of his connections with an alleged Chinese spy and should not be on the House Intelligence Committee, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Thursday.

The California Republican also told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" that he questions how Swalwell was able to get on the committee and how much House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Intel Chairman Adam Schiff knew before the committee appointment was made.

"It is the most difficult committee to get on," McCarthy said. "It's only selected by the leaders of both parties. He got on as a sophomore. How could he do that?"

According to an Axios report, a Chinese operative named Fang Fang or Christine Fang had developed relationships with a number of politicians, including Swalwell. The California Democrat has not been officially accused of wrongdoing and said Wednesday he cooperated with the FBI's questioning.

"This is a national security threat," McCarthy said. "The Intel committee does not meet in normal chambers. They meet in what is to protect people from listening in on what they're talking about. They are getting secrets that other members of Congress never are able to see."

He pointed out that just last week, Swalwell attacked Director of Intelligence John Ratcliffe's report on the expansion of Chinese spying.

McCarthy added that he wants to know why Democrats pulled out of the bipartisan China task force that would look at the issue and noted that Swalwell also sits on the committee dealing with space and technology.

"These questions continue to rise about this individual," said McCarthy.

McCarthy said he is going to ask for a briefing from FBI Director Christopher Wray about Swalwell because, as a minority leader and a member of the congressional Gang of Eight, he did not know about the congressman's actions.

"If what I read is correct, that the FBI went to him and then the Democrat leadership maintained him on this committee, that is wrong to start out with," said McCarthy. "Here we have Eric Swalwell sitting in this meeting, where you have Nancy Pelosi and Adam Schiff knowingly, by what Eric Swalwell says, that he was associated with the Chinese spy, when he was warned about it, the Chinese spy left the country."
