Rep. Swalwell: Good for Nation That Trump Is Working With Dems

By    |   Friday, 15 September 2017 12:50 PM

If a deal can be reached that helps the nation's "Dreamers," then President Donald Trump's talks and work with Democrats are a good thing for the country, Rep. Eric Swalwell said Friday.

"If we can strike a deal that helps Dreamers, we should do that, regardless of who we're doing it for," the California Democrat told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program.

"Right now, we've got leverage behind us and the energy of the American people. I see us right now as America's bouncer; we're going to let the good ideas in, and we have the votes in Congress to keep the bad ones out. We should relish that role," Swalwell said.

Swalwell, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, also responded to a question about whether Democrats may inadvertently help Trump's chances of winning the 2020 race by working with him.

"If the success is for people who are looking for work and we can extend opportunity to them, we should do that," said Swalwell. "If the success is infrastructure that puts good union jobs across the country and moves people around, we should do that. If the success means that immigrants who don't have a pathway to citizenship right now can find one, we should do that."

And as far as political calculations, Swalwell said Democrats would be "in the wilderness for a very long time" if all they did was obstruct Trump.

"We should resist any time he wants to hurt people," said Swalwell, "but if he's coming over to us and wants to help lift people up, we've got to take that."

If Trump is seeking help from Democrats, then "that's just how it is," said Swalwell.

"We're in a very strong bargaining position and we should relish that."

Meanwhile, at the end of the month, testimony about the ongoing Russia investigation will heat up before the Intelligence Committee, when Roger Stone plans to speak to the lawmakers.

"From Roger Stone, we hope to learn the same things we learned from Paul Manafort, Carter Page, Don [Trump] Jr., and others who were particularly active in their dealings with Russians during the summer of 2016," said Swalwell. "I'd throw Michael Cohen in there as well."
