Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, told MSNBC on Wednesday she would not vote for a Supreme Court nominee who "demonstrates hostility toward Roe v. Wade and doesn't consider it to be settled law."

"There could be a person who is very strongly for Roe v. Wade but lacks the qualification, the experience, the integrity, has ethical issues in the background, the FBI report turned up some troubling issues," Collins added. "I'm not going to vote for that person just because they're for Roe v. Wade."

Collins, along with Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, will be swing votes in a narrowly divided Senate on whether to confirm President Donald Trump's pick to fill retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy's seat on the Supreme Court.

Both voted Neil Gorsuch in last year.

Collins met with Trump to tell him she would not back some of the candidates on his short list and pressed him to expand his picks. Trump plans to announce his choice July 9. The new justice would set the court's balance at five Republican-appointed judges and four Democratic-appointed judges.

Trump last week said he would not ask the potential nominees about their view on the 1972 landmark decision that legalized abortion nationally.

"As the president said last week, he's not going to talk to judges about specific cases," White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Monday. "He is looking for individuals that have the right intellect, the right temperament, and that will uphold the Constitution."
