Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, is still weighing her options when it comes to a potential run for governor of her home state.

The moderate Republican, though well-liked by many of her colleagues in Congress, is considering leaving Washington, D.C., in favor of running to replace Maine's Gov. Paul LePage, a conservative who Politico described as "America's craziest governor."

"Given the contentious environment in Washington right now, my voice and vote matter a great deal," Collins told Politico. "On the other hand, if I were fortunate enough to be elected governor, I could work more directly on job creation."

She also said, "That's why it's such a difficult decision to make. And I'm trying to figure out where I matter most."

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., after seeing a report saying Collins is considering leaving the Senate, reportedly told the Maine Republican "don't do it."

"She is [up in the air]. And I think she had hoped to make a decision before this," Heitkamp told Politico.

"I desperately hope she doesn't run," she added, though acknowledging that "fundamentally, she wants to go home."

Collins did say that although her committee work and seniority "really matter," that she sees the governor's office as an opportunity to affect change in a region that faces harsh economic prospects.

"I'm from the northern part of the state, which needs a lot of help … two-thirds of the state is losing population and opportunity," she said. "I have some ideas for economic development that only a governor can pursue."
