Democrats are taking a page from Republicans in retooling their super PACs to use “loopholes and legal gray areas” to rake in hundreds of millions of dollars for the 2016 election,
The New York Times reports.
The plan is revealed in an emergency request filed with the Federal Election Commission [FEC] and designed to help prospective candidates raise money for super PACs before they throw their hats in the ring.
Lawyers for the Democrats also want the FEC to spell out how declared candidates, can court donors for independent super PACs — a clarification that may have “profound ramifications,” The Times reports.
Some Democrats like Hillary Clinton, have feared getting to super PAC fund-raising,” according to the newspaper.
If Democrats are allowed to use the proposed tactics, The Times says, it would be “a blunt admission that the party cannot compete effectively if it forgoes campaign and fund-raising tactics already widely used by Republicans.”
According to the newspaper, GOP super PACs have already “raised or committed” hundreds of millions of dollars in the 2016 election cycle.
