If Democrats hope to regain power they must rebrand themselves as the jobs party and avoid policies that are associated with the far left, according to a report released on Tuesday by the center-left Third Way think tank.

The report is based on extensive, three-day online focus groups with persuadable voters who backed Barack Obama and then President Donald Trump, as well as with millennial voters.

The focus groups consistently insisted that Trump concentrated on jobs as his top priority, while Democrats were labeled as being against business, as well as neglecting the middle class.

The study urged Democrats to avoid any proposals that could be branded as handouts or attacking businesses.

Although the survey points out that many voters agree with Democrats on social issues, they do not consider those to be the top priority.

Third Way emphasized that any attempt by Democrats to focus on more and better jobs "should be impassioned and unequivocal," because if it "is lost among a muddle of ideas and messaging, it will be hard for the party" to be seen as the preferred one for job creation.

The study stressed that "Effective policy solutions to bolster economic security are vital, but they must begin with job creation and be tethered to the values of hard work and earning your way that underscore America's economic compact."

The survey comes out just as Sen. Bernie Sanders' expected introduction of a single-payer healthcare bill this month is worrying many Democrats who are concerned the proposal will divide the party by pitting his liberal base against more moderate Democrats and make it more difficult to win at the ballot box, The Hill reported.
