Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is finding it tough sledding on Capitol Hill, a place where he has little street cred and lawmakers remain suspicious of his bonafides, Politico reports.

And though Mnuchin is the point man for the White House on tax reform, it's going to be President Donald Trump who will have the pull with Republican lawmakers, Politico reports.

"We see the president as the top salesman," a House aide told Politico. "Trump supporters will watch Trump selling this, and they will be swayed by Trump, not Steven Mnuchin."

At issue for lawmakers: Mnuchin is a political neophyte who brought zero policy acumen but strong Wall Street connections to his role in Trump's cabinet, Politico reports.

"I think it has taken him awhile because he was thrown into the situation cold," Sen. Orrin Hatch told Politico. "He has a tremendous business background."

Mnuchin is part of the Big 6, according to CNBC, who has been hammering out Republicans' tax reform legislation, and a big win there could go a long way to improving his standing with Congress, past gaffes aside.

Earlier this month, he said that the estate tax repeal would help the rich, according to the New York Times.

Tax reform legislation would start with the bill coming out of House Ways and Means next week.

"A big part of this will be to make sure the White House and Treasury is coming out with a consistent position," a congressional aide told Politico. "Things will get tough. That will be the real test."
