Rep. Scalise: Trump's Jerusalem Decision Good If Hamas Opposes It

Fox Business Network's "Mornings With Maria"

Steve Scalise, R-La., credited President Donald Trump for the expected announcement that he would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move the U.S. embassy there.

"When a terrorist organization like Hamas is criticizing it, then maybe he's on the right track," Scalise said Wednesday on Fox Business Network's "Mornings With Maria."

The announcement shows Trump is willing to support U.S. allies, Scalise continued, and "that gives us a better chance to get peace, when you're not willing to roll over and let terrorist organizations dictate the terms."

Israelis and Palestinians dispute which of them has rightful claim to the city. Past presidents have said Israelis and Palestinians must negotiate toward the status of the holy city, according to The Hill.

The European Union's top diplomat Federica Mogherini, on Wednesday criticized the announcement, telling The New York Times: "We believe that any action that would undermine these efforts [toward peace] in the Middle East must absolutely be avoided."
