Rep. Steve King said Saturday that the key to whether President Donald Trump's accusations that the Obama administration wire-tapped his telephones during the campaign are any warrants issued by the secret FISA court authorizing the surveillance.

"There's no evidence to back it up," the Iowa Republican told Pamela Brown on CNN. "The place to look is to see if there have been FISA warrants that have been issued."

He noted news reports last year that the FBI had twice approached the court established under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act seeking warrants in an investigation of the Trump campaign's possible activities with Russia.

"This was reported that the FBI sought FISA warrants but had been denied as of last summer," King said. "In November, the BBC reported on the second attempt.

"The FBI had received the FISA warrant.

"That may be what President Trump is addressing — and it's something we need to get to the bottom of it.

"Some of it may be classified, so this could be a while before we get to the bottom of this," he said.

King, 67, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, said that if the court granted the surveillance, it needs to be investigated "to make sure they are protecting the privacy of everyone.

"If they were wire-tapping the [Russian] ambassador, and that information was leaked out — and that turns out to be true — that is a felony.

"We should be drilling into that."
