A Democratic member of the House who won her election campaigning for commonsense gun laws in 2016 praised President Donald Trump for taking the lead on gun control.

Rep. Stephanie Murphy, D-Fla., attended and spoke at Wednesday's White House meeting that included Trump and a bipartisan group of lawmakers discussing what to do about the gun violence epidemic. On Thursday, Murphy appeared on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" to continue the conversation.

"You know, I was really heartened by what the president said and some of the commitments that he made to see this through to the end," Murphy said. "I represent a district in central Florida that was deeply affected by [the 2016] Pulse [Nightclub shooting], and I will tell you that my constituents in Florida want to see us take action.

"This might be a Nixon goes to China moment for Trump. He might be the only president who can help us advance some commonsense gun safety measures because as Sen. Toomey said, nobody believes he's trying to take away anybody's guns."

Murphy is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, comprised of conservative Democrats in the House. She declared her candidacy following the Pulse Nightclub shooting in 2016 that left 49 people dead and 58 people injured.

Murphy has introduced a bill that would allow the CDC and other federal agencies look into the issue of gun violence.

"I think [Trump] needs live into some of the commitments that he talked about yesterday, and he needs to do that by encouraging and pressuring the Republican-led Congress to allow some of these votes to come to the floor," Murphy said. "It would be helpful for him to help whip some of those votes.

"This is a public health crisis and we need the facts and the research and the data to cut through the polarized and ideological conversations that we're having about gun violence so that we can actually get to real commonsense solutions for the American people."
