President Donald Trump's response to the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia has prompted one of the State Department's science envoy to resign.

Daniel Kammen, appointed last year as a science envoy, tweeted a letter of resignation to Trump on Wednesday saying he was quitting "in response" to the president's "attacks on core values of the United States."

"Your failure to condemn white supremacists and neo-Nazis has domestic and international ramifications," he wrote. "Particularly troubling to me is how your response to Charlottesville is consistent with a broader pattern of behavior that enables sexism and racism."

Kammen also mentions Trump's "decision to abdicate the leadership opportunities and the job creation benefits of the Paris climate accord," by announcing in June that the U.S. would abandon the agreement, saying Trump's actions "to undermine energy and environmental research are not acceptable."

He added that "Acts and words matter. Your actions to date have, sadly harmed the quality of life in the United States, our standing abroad, and the sustainability of the planet."

Kammen is the latest administration figure to resign, following members of the Infrastructure Advisory Council appointed by Trump's predecessor, President Barack Obama, one of his evangelical advisers, the White House arts panel, and multiple members of his manufacturing council before Trump disbanded it.
