President Donald Trump said Tuesday that his administration was considering forming a “space force” branch of the military.
Trump made the comment when talking to the West Point Black Knights football team, after inviting them to the White House to award the team and its coach with the Commander-in-Chief trophy after defeating both the Air Force and Navy teams in the last season, The Washington Free Beacon reported.
The trophy has been awarded since 1972 to the military service academy that wins the three-way competition between the Army, Navy, and Air Force academies, the report said.
"We are getting very big in space, both militarily and for other reasons, and we are seriously thinking of the Space Force," Trump said, The Free Beacon reported.
The president also praised the West Point football team’s players; some will become commissioned Army officers when they graduate, The Free Beacon reported.
"You will join the greatest force for peace and justice the world has ever known. You will keep us safe. You will keep us strong. You will keep us free, and thank you for your service," Trump said, The Free Beacon reported.
Trump first floated the idea of a "space force" in March during a speech at a California military base.
"My new national strategy for space recognizes that space is a war fighting domain, just like the air, land, and sea. We may even have a Space Force," Trump said.
