SC Gov. Haley Faces Two-Party Opposition to Ethics Reform

SC Gov. Haley Faces Two-Party Opposition to Ethics Reform

By    |   Tuesday, 21 May 2013 01:11 PM

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is facing a bumpy political ride as she continues her push for a sweeping overhaul of the Palmetto State's ethics laws.

The State newspaper reports that Haley faces heavy opposition in her own party, with Republican state Sens. Lee Bright and Kevin Bryant wanting the Senate to first vote on a House bill to kill Obamacare.

Democrats are also balking, with state Sen. Brad Hutto saying his party will support legislation to spend more on improving highways before backing ethics legislation.

Hutto added: "Gov. Haley is all talk when it comes [to] ethics. She may call for good government, but she repeatedly uses the state airplane for political purposes.''

But Haley said the state is long overdue to get its ethics laws sorted out and strengthened.

"It's time to stay and get the job done. Finish the budget and move right on to ethics because it is time," Haley said.

"We need to show the people of the world that we don't have issues in South Carolina, that we are not afraid of ethics reform, and that we are going to pass a strong ethics reform bill this year."

The South Carolina House Ethics Committee has twice cleared Haley of alleged ethics violations.
