Senior White House officials have started planning with the pro-Trump nonprofit America First Policies a multimillion-dollar campaign to sell tax reform, Politico reported on Tuesday.

Among the top White House officials at the Monday get-together was President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner. The gathering decided to map out a strategy for an aggressive effort to push the tax legislation, as the administration seeks to obtain its first major legislative victory.

A White House spokesman, however, refused to comment on the discussions.

Several people told Politico that the main purpose of the meeting was to establish America First Policies as the major pro-Trump organization complementing the administration’s tax reform efforts.

It comes at a crucial time, as former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon has started a nationwide campaign to vote out Senate Republicans in next year’s midterms, an anti-incumbent ploy that some Trump supporters say could undercut the president’s efforts to pass tax reform in Congress.

Later on Tuesday, America First Action plans to hold its first organizational gathering to accelerate its planning for the 2018 and 2020 elections.

The session, to be hosted by oilman T. Boone Pickens at his Texas home, is expected to include Donald Trump, Jr. giving a presentation.

Axios reported that among those who have recently joined America First Action is former Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke, who is the group's senior advisor and spokesman.

Clarke said he joined the organization to "ensure that the will of the American people who got President Trump elected is not derailed by the left or the self-serving Washington establishment."
