In 2010, Donald Trump praised then-President Barack Obama for waiting to hold the final votes on passing Obamacare until a new senator, Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., could take office.

That comment has come to light again because the current Republican plan on tax cuts is the opposite: the party wants to pass the plan before the seating of just-elected Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala., according to CNN.

"He said now, you know, we have to give Massachusetts their vote, which was a very smart thing for him to say. But that may kill his healthcare plan," Trump said in 2010, according to CNN.

"He has devoted an entire year, and all of his capital, to this one particular situation that a lot of people don't want," Trump said about Obama in 2010.

Jones would narrow the Republican Senate majority to 51-49, which could lead to difficulty passing the tax cut bill.

Democrats had a supermajority in 2010, but Republicans have a close margin today; so a Jones vote could tip the balance on the tax cut bill, a White House official told CNN.

"We should be ready to make some noise if [Senate Majority Leader Mitch] McConnell doesn't seat Jones before we vote on tax reform. Alabamians deserve to have their voices fully heard," said Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., according to CNN.

Alabama officials have said they would not certify the Senate race results until Dec. 26. However, Republicans want to vote on their tax bill in the next week, according to The Hill.
