Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wields some heavy leverage amid the recent din of canceling the upper chamber's August recess in the name of catching up on work.

Keeping the Senate working through recess also would ostensibly prevent the 24 Democrats - many of those vulnerable - who are up for re-election from leaving D.C. and hitting the campaign trail in August.

The backdrop is the letter signed and sent by 16 Senate Republicans asking McConnell to cancel recess, given the backlog of confirmations amid critical appropriations work ahead of the end of the fiscal year in September.

Even President Donald Trump is exhorting Republicans to stay and work.

Doing so also would deliver a serious blow to the campaigns of vulnerable Democrats like Sens. Joe Manchin, Heidi Heitkamp, Joe Donnelly, Jon Tester and Claire McCaskill, to name a few.

Overall, 10 Senate Democratic incumbents are facing challenges in their states that Trump won by 10 points or more in 2016.

Do they eschew valuable campaign time at home or get pummeled for missing votes?

Meanwhile, just nine Republicans are facing reelection, including Sens. Dean Heller and Ted Cruz, both of whom are in for fights but signed the letter to McConnell.

The ball - and the leverage - is in McConnell's court.

"The threat of canceling an August recess … can move mountains. … The Senate can move quite quickly when the consent is there," Jim Newell wrote for Slate.

"Senators facing possible defeat can discover reservoirs of sweet reason in abundance if the alternative is being stuck in Washington – particularly if they aren’t getting much visible work done – as opponents savage them back home. McConnell knows this. He will probably count on its powerful effect as he mulls the August recess," Ed Kilgore writes for New York magazine.
