Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., urged retiring House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., to break free of the hard-right Republicans in Congress in the months before he leaves office, The Washington Times is reporting.
“With his newfound political freedom, I hope the speaker uses his remaining time in Congress to break free from the hard-right factions of his caucus that have kept Congress from getting real things done,” Schumer said. “If he’s willing to reach across the aisle, he’ll find Democrats willing and eager to work with him.”
Schumer, while noting they disagree on issues, said Ryan is a “good man who is always true to his word.”
Ryan confirmed on Wednesday that he will not seek re-election in November.
"I will be retiring in January, leaving this majority in good hands with what I believe is a very bright future," he said.
