State and local jurisdictions would not be able to afford proper healthcare for citizens under the Senate Republicans' health plan, the National League of Cities said.
NLC president Matt Zone said in a statement his organization opposes the Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA), the Senate GOP's repeal and replace legislation for the current Obamacare law.
"This week, city leaders sent a clear message to Congress: You can't fix the American healthcare system by sticking local governments with the bill," Zone said. "The Better Care Reconciliation Act threatens the well being of millions of Americans by reducing their access to healthcare — whether in our nation's urban centers or throughout small-town America — leaving millions uninsured and decimating the programs that help families stay healthy in our communities."
Zone then referenced changes to federal funding for Medicaid in the BCRA, which he said would be too costly for state and local governments.
"If the federal government pulls back on its commitment to healthcare, the burden of providing care will fall to cities, counties, states, and local providers," he said. "Neither local governments nor everyday Americans have the resources to absorb an unfunded mandate of this magnitude.
"We urge the Senate to stand with cities and take this opportunity to work toward a healthcare system that promotes strong healthy communities without placing the financial burden on local governments."
Senate Republicans wanted to put their healthcare bill up for a floor vote Thursday, but that has been postponed until after the July 4 recess because the legislation still lacks support.
