Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., says he is convinced Americans will make the right decision on coronavirus mandates if they are given more information.
Scott made his comments in a column posted Thursday by Fox News.
“One of the strengths of America is its individualism – rugged individualism,” he said. “Americans cherish the right to run our own lives and make our own choices. Even during a crisis, we can’t forget the fundamental freedoms that undergirded our country’s founding.
“I understand the need to do no harm to others. That’s why I’ve consistently and vocally urged people in Florida and across the country to wear masks, social distance and stay home as much as possible. People ignoring these warnings are being selfish – they’re not only putting their own health at risk, but also the health and well-being of their families, friends and co-workers.”
“In a free society we have the right to act stupid, and we tend to regularly exercise that right. But if you are ignoring commonsense precautions, you are not only endangering yourself and others, you are also prolonging the economic pain for this country.”
He claimed the press wants the government to mandate face masks and shut the economy again. But he said reclosing the economy could take the U.S. into a depression.
“Our elected leaders can’t sugar coat where we are,” he said. “Give us the facts and what they believe we need to do to beat this. The American people will make the right decisions for their families. We will hold each other accountable.”
