Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., in 2004 criticized an opponent for taking trips on a private plane that taxpayer money funded, but now has stirred controversy for flying on a private plane that she owns, The Washington Free Beacon reported.

In 2004, McCaskill slammed then-Missouri Gov. Bob Holden, noting his "lavish" lifestyle and trips on a private jet.

Reporter Brent Scher reported June 12 in the Free Beacon that GPS tracking information showed her using a private plane during her campaign's RV tour.

After that report, President Donald Trump took aim at McCaskill for her private jet use. "RVs are not for her. People are really upset, so phony!" Trump wrote on Twitter.

Scher reported that McCaskill was herself criticized for similar use of taxpayer-funded plane trips in 2012, but later reimbursed $88,000 to taxpayers and sold the plane — but bought a new one in 2013 after winning re-election, the report said.
