Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said nominating Senate candidate Roy Moore was "a bridge too far" for the Republican party, explaining he felt that way even before accusations surfaced Thursday that the Alabama Republican engaged in inappropriate sexual contact four decades ago with teenage girls, The Hill reported Saturday.

"Look, I'm sorry, but even before these reports surfaced, Roy Moore's nomination was a bridge too far," Corker tweeted Saturday.

Moore has denied the allegations and on Saturday told a group at a Veterans Day campaign event that the charges were "completely false and untrue," labeling those who sought to attack him as "desperate."

Corker, who announced he was retiring in September, has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump as well as several fellow Republicans.
