Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Mitt Romney is "sucking up" to President-elect Donald Trump as he seeks the cabinet position of secretary of state.
Gingrich made the remark during a wide-ranging interview with conservative radio host Laura Ingraham.
"There's a scene in 'Pretty Women,' where Richard Gere goes up to the salesman on Rodeo Drive and says, 'We need a little sucking up here,'" Gingrich said.
"You have never, ever in your career seen a serious adult who's wealthy, independent, has been a presidential nominee, suck up at the rate that Mitt Romney is sucking up. And I am confident that he thinks now that Donald Trump is one of his closest friends, that they have so many things in common, that they're both such wise, brilliant people."
Romney criticized Trump earlier this year. Now, however, he is one of four people being considered to head the Department of State. He has met with Trump twice, including at a dinner Tuesday night.
In a stark reversal from his earlier comments, Romney praised Trump and the appointments he has made to his administration Tuesday.
Gingrich, who was almost Trump's running mate and who has asked Trump for a job in his administration, also appeared to take a shot at Romney's wealth.
"I'm sure last night, at an elegant three-star restaurant in New York, that Mitt was fully at home, happy to share his vision of populism, which involved a little foie gras, a certain amount of superb cooking, but it was done in a populist, happy manner," he told Ingraham.
