Rep. Sean Duffy: Republicans, Dems Aren't Always Fighting

Fox News' "America's Newsroom"

The fights between Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill are often good news fodder, but outside of those moments, there are many lawmakers who work outside their parties to get things done — but President Barack Obama wasn't one of them, Rep. Sean Duffy said Wednesday.

"Over the last eight years, Barack Obama didn't want to work with Republicans," the Wisconsin Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" program. However, he expects matter to be different when President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

"[He] understands working across the political aisle," said Duffy. "If he brings in Republicans and Democrats, we should all go bowling at the White House, or have a few people over in the Oval Office. Reach out, maybe we'll have a beer and he can have a Coke. Let's engage in personal relationships.

"Once the trust is established, then work can begin on bigger issues," Duffy continued, "and even though there may not be agreement on the far left and far right, but there is a lot of stuff in the middle we can get done that will move the country forward, to help middle income Americans left behind by the economy."

Duffy also spoke out against the growing list of Democrats planning to stay away from Trump's inauguration ceremonies, pointing out that Trump himself has shown a good ability to forget past offenses and fights.

"Mitt Romney a perfect example of that," said Duffy. "Romney said horrible things about Mr. Trump and Trump about Romney. They got together and were almost working together. I think Donald Trump will do that moving forward."
